Tipping Etiquette Around the World
Tipping customs vary dramatically around the world. What's considered generous in one country might be offensive in another. Here's your complete guide to international tipping etiquette.
North America
United States
- Restaurants: 18-20% of pre-tax total (minimum 15%)
- Bars: $1-2 per drink or 15-20% of tab
- Delivery: 15-20% with $3 minimum
- Taxis: 15-20% of fare
Canada
Similar to the US, with 15-20% being standard for restaurants. Some provinces include tax in tip calculations.

France
Service compris (included) is standard. Small additional tip (5-10%) for exceptional service.
Germany
Round up to nearest euro or add 5-10%. Say "stimmt so" (keep the change) when paying.
Italy
Coperto (cover charge) is common. Additional 10% tip for good service, but not mandatory.
Asia
Japan
No tipping! It can be considered rude. Exceptional service is expected as standard.
China
Generally no tipping in local restaurants. High-end hotels and Western restaurants may expect 10%.
India
10% in restaurants is appreciated. Round up for taxis and small services.
Thailand
Not expected but appreciated. Round up or leave small change in restaurants.
Australia & New Zealand
Tipping is not mandatory as service charges are included in prices. 10% for exceptional service in upscale restaurants is appreciated but not expected.
Middle East & Africa

10-15% in restaurants. Many establishments add service charges automatically.
South Africa
10-15% is standard. Tipping is important as wages are often low.
